What are Glabellar Lines?

Glabellar lines are the lines and wrinkles you commonly see between the eyebrows when a person frowns. Over time, the repeated muscle movement behind this area of skin combined with the effects of aging causes the skin to lose its laxity. When this happens the vertical, oblique and horizontal lines become permanent and visible even when the person is not frowning. Dynamic and permanent glabellar lines tend to produce an angry, frustrated, agitated and aged appearance.

Vertical Glabellar Lines

As the name suggests this type of glabellar line runs vertically upward from the inward edge of the eyebrows. Due to their position and appearance, these deeper wrinkles are often referred to as the elevens. The 11s are caused progressively by the corrugator muscle, the horizontal part of which acts to pull the eyebrows down and inward. In a few people, the muscle causes a distinct large vertical crease to form rather than the two vertical glabellars.

Oblique or Diagonal Glabellar Lines

These lines are generally in the same location as the vertical glabellar facial lines, extending above the height of the eyebrows. The oblique glabellar creases are not part of the vertical lines. They are distinct lines which can appear alongside or instead of the vertical lines. The oblique glabellars extend obliquely or diagonally from the inner eyebrow. The medial eyebrow depressors (consisting of the medial fibers of the orbicularis oculi muscles, the depressor supercilii and the oblique head of corrugators) are the cause of these types of glabellar creases.

Bunny Line Glabellar Lines

The bunny line can refer to two things. The more commonly known expression refers to the tiny horizontal creases which are visible on the sides of the upper nose. They appear after muscle relaxing injections have been used in the forehead and are stated as being obvious signs of Botox use. The other reference to a bunny line is also a horizontal crease but which sits below the eyebrows. The procerus muscle (which pulls down the inner eyebrows) causes these wrinkles as the muscle pushes down against the skin of the nose (which is more fixed).

How to Prevent Glabellar Lines

There’s no easy way to stop the signs of ageing, including glabellar creases. As our skin ages it loses elasticity. Our facial region especially begins to show wear and tear. There are some things you can do to slow down the process of developing glabellar lines.  Many experts suggest avoiding exaggerated facial expressions, keeping your skin hydrated and away from extreme weather conditions such as high wind and sun exposure. Facial massages can also help smooth some glabellar creases. The glabellars will first appear dynamically (only be visible if you make certain facial movements). However over time, developed facial creases become permanent and visible without frowning or other expressions. These advanced glabellar lines can only be eliminated with cosmetic treatments such as injections or surgery such as foreheadplasty.

Cosmetic Injections for Glabellar Lines

Several options exist for temporarily eliminating glabellar lines including Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA), Restylane and Juvederm. Cosmetic injections such as these only provide a temporary solution for reducing glabellar creases with results lasting around 4 to 6 months. Extreme care needs to be taken when injecting this facial area since it contains fewer blood vessels. An oversupply of filler can cause unwanted side effects such as redness, swelling and even infection. The cosmetic surgeon should be very conservative and should be experienced. Some surgeons prefer to use Juvederm since this filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if any complications occur.

How do Glabellar Line Injections Work?

The injectables work by blocking nerve impulses that initiate muscle contractions which contribute to these wrinkles. The muscle relaxing injections take several days to show results. Many of them are approved for moderate to severe glabellar lines and are suitable for persons up to the age of 65. By constricting muscle movement, the skin has the ability to relax, preventing wrinkle causing movements and providing a more youthful appearance. Deeper glabellar wrinkles often require injectable fillers to be used in combination with muscle relaxing injections in order to provide a completely smooth area between the eyebrows.
