Types of Laser Treatment

Ablative lasers can be used to rejuvenate the skin or to correct ailments and blemishes. The most popular uses include skin rejuvenation, blemishes, veins and tattoo removal.

In terms of skin problems, lasers can alleviate age spots, rosacea, superficial scarring, sun damage, discolouration, acne scarring and brown spots. The laser works by breaking down the colouring of the imperfection over a number of visits.

Problems with facial veins which can be treated with lasers include broken facial capillaries, spider veins and blood vessels. During laser treatment, the blood in the vein absorbs the laser light, destroying the vein. The body then naturally removes the damaged vein using its own immune system over the following weeks.

Skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing are also common reasons why people opt for laser treatment. Laser resurfacing offers anti-aging benefits by removing the outer layer of the skin, allowing new fresh skin to develop and increased production of collagen. This technique also removes wrinkles, scarring and other blemishes.

Non ablative lasers can also be used for laser hair removal.

Laser Treatment Results

The results you can expect from laser treatment largely depend on the marks you’re trying to alleviate. Tattoo removal can be very effective and offers permanent results. Eliminating discoloration and irregularities such as birth marks is long lasting and permanent in most cases. With facial rejuvenation, your skin will appear younger, however your face will continue to age with time. You may require touch up treatments over time.

As for Laser treatment for acne, the results depend on the individuals’ skin type. Some may respond to the laser very well whilst others may only see a slight improvement. In most cases however, laser treatment should cause a significant reduction in acne and removal of scars.

Laser Treatment Aftercare

The effects of laser treatment vary based on what you’re treating. For example, laser facial rejuvenation is much more invasive and requires more intense aftercare than for example having a small brown spot removed. Whatever your treatment, you need to follow your practitioner’s instructions thoroughly.

After laser treatment, the area will be sore, red and swollen.  You may also be itchy but you should avoid scratching the area as this may lead to permanent scarring. You can take some pain away with topical creams (as prescribed by your doctor) and using ice packs. The extent of aftercare will depend on the size of the area treated and how many layers of skin were vaporized.

With less invasive treatments, you should be able to apply makeup however you must avoid rubbing the area. Rather, use your fingertips to pat on the make-up. More invasive treatments will require up to two weeks’ time off work.
